This Weeks Project
Dec 11th, 2009 by Anisha
I should have been working on quilt blocks this week, because the class is tomorrow and I haven’t started any of them for this month yet. I’ve had my eye on these super cute blocks that spell out Merry Christmas from Tai Pan the past couple months. It wasn’t really a shocker when I went there last week and they were sold out. There were entirely too expensive anyway, so I decided to make my own. They turned pretty cute. I think they are cuter than the ones at Tai Pan because the ones there were only white and green. Anyway….here’s the process.
I bought a big piece of wood and measured out how big I wanted each block. Kimball (Brad’s brother) is taking a wood working class at UVU right now, so he took the wood to school and cut it up and sanded the edges for me. These are the blocks before I sprayed them.
I sprayed them with a tan color first.
I then took painters tape and lined it on a piece of masonite. I measured each block to see how big I wanted each letter. Brad helped me get the letters the right size. I printed each letter off and taped it on top of the masonite then traced the letters with an xacto knife so it would cut through the painters tape. I then pealed the letters off the masonite and stuck them to each block.
After all the letters were on I spray painted them green and red.
After they were mostly dry I went and pealed the painters tape off. When they were completely dry I sanded the edges and sprayed them with a clear coat. I also made a star but didn’t get any pictures of its progress.
This is the finished product. They are cuter in real life because you can see the tan color through the sanded edges. Anyway, it was fun and pretty easy and way cheaper than buying them from Tai Pan.
